WATCHING HOME FROM AFAR

Philippine public affairs, seen from overseas.

PHExpat is Jessie’s independent blog about the Philippines and the questions that follow Filipinos wherever we live: how public decisions are made, who they affect, and what the evidence shows.

Our editorial approach is evidence-led and nonpartisan. Public officials, parties and institutions deserve the same scrutiny. A claim does not become a fact because it comes from someone we agree with.

What you’ll find here

  • Philippines Today: factual reporting on public affairs, with sources and dates.
  • Explained: plain-language context on institutions, policy and public decisions.
  • Receipts: source documents and the limits of what they establish.
  • OFW Viewpoint: clearly labeled perspectives on life between countries.
  • Dear Ma: personal essays addressed to my late mother.

Dear Ma

“Ma, let me tell you what’s happening back home.” This is the starting point for our signature column: a personal way to think through home, distance and public life. It is a literary address to a loved one, not reported dialogue. These essays are labeled opinion and kept distinct from factual reporting.

Reading with care

Reporting should identify its sources, distinguish allegations from established facts, and acknowledge uncertainty. Opinion should make its argument openly without disguising itself as news. Significant errors should be corrected visibly.

Older articles on digital tools, travel and remittances remain part of the PHExpat archive. Read them with their original publication dates in mind; products, prices and policies may have changed.
